The Memorial Opera House has been standing on Indiana Avenue in downtown Valparaiso since 1893, built as a memorial to Civil War veterans rather than as a commercial theater. It is one of 592 Grand Army of the Republic memorial halls put up around the country and one of very few still operating as a working stage. The Marx Brothers played here. So did John Philip Sousa and William Jennings Bryan.

What to Expect
The building came through an extensive renovation funded with federal American Rescue Plan money, inside and out. The seats are new — the old ones were narrow and worn to the point of springs coming through — and an upstairs space, the Klemz Lounge, was reworked for smaller events. What did not change is the room itself: a small historic house where the back row is still close to the stage.
Programming runs broad. Blues acts, tribute bills and touring songwriters share the calendar with plays and community productions, so a month may hold one concert or four. Free street parking surrounds the building with a limited lot behind it, and the venue admits children five and older.
Ownership has been in transition — Porter County, which has run the building, has discussed handing it to the City of Valparaiso to fold into its arts district. Programming continues either way, but it is worth checking the venue’s own calendar rather than trusting an aggregator.
