H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts

The grand marquee on West Main Street is hard to miss after dark, and it belongs to the only proper stage in Hancock County. The H.J. Ricks Centre for the Arts opened in 1946 as the Weil movie theater, an Art Deco and Art Moderne house built for a downtown that still had a downtown. A major renovation in 2001 gave it a full stage, modern sound and a complete theatrical lighting rig, and it has run since as a nonprofit community arts centre — board-governed, volunteer-heavy, and genuinely the room Greenfield turns to when something needs a stage.

What to Expect

Be honest with yourself about what this is and you’ll have a good night. The Ricks is not a music club — it’s a 500-capacity community theater that books music several times a month between dance recitals, pageants, film festivals and free family movie nights. When it does book music, it books well: rock bands from around central Indiana, tribute acts, and comics off the Bob & Tom circuit. Doors open one hour before showtime, every show, which is the kind of house rule that’s worth knowing before you drive.

Ticketing varies more than at most venues, so check before you leave. Some shows are a few dollars cash at the door and nothing else; others sell online in advance. A handful of dates are 21+ when an outside promoter brings a bar, but the building is otherwise all-ages and family-friendly — the free movie nights, with concessions that fund the theater, are a real Friday option if you have kids. Free street parking downtown, and the square is walkable to a few places to eat first.
