A 1916 movie palace on Monument Circle that has been home to the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra since 1984. Around 1,660 seats, which makes it intimate for a hall of this pedigree — the balcony is genuinely close, and the acoustics are warm rather than clinical. The interior is the reason people take photos in the lobby: mirrored boxes, oval balconies, and the ornate plasterwork of a building that opened as a grand cinema. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The Encore Lounge off the first-floor lobby is the pre-show move. Parking is straightforward for downtown — several garages sit within a couple of blocks, and IndyGo routes converge on the Circle. Worth knowing that the orchestra decamps to Conner Prairie in Fishers for its summer season, so a quiet Hilbert calendar in July is not a sign of anything being wrong.
