Madison calls itself Indiana’s music city, and unlike most towns that say something like that, it has the calendar to back it up. A 150-seat listening room on Main Street books national Americana acts. Bars along the riverfront run bands most weekends. And in September the town hosts one of the largest roots festivals in the state. All of it sits inside a 133-block National Historic Landmark district on the Ohio River, about an hour from Louisville and two from Indianapolis.
Red Bicycle Hall
The room that makes Madison worth a drive. Red Bicycle Hall, at 125–127 East Main Street, holds about 150 people in a restored downtown building, and its booking punches far above that number. Two long-running series feed it: the Kindred Folks Music Series, which has brought in SHEL, Parsonsfield, The Black Lillies, Wild Ponies and a young Billy Strings, and the Roostertail Music Series, which leans outlaw and Americana — Ward Davis, Chris Knight, Sunny Sweeney.
It runs as a community partnership rather than a commercial club, alongside theater and arts programming, which is why the calendar is irregular but the bookings are consistently strong. Check ahead; this is not a room with something on every weekend.
Bars and Taprooms
1st Street Saloon runs live entertainment every weekend — full bands and solo acts — with an expanded patio plus cornhole, darts, pool and bowling. It is the late-night option downtown.
Off Broadway Taproom pairs a deep craft beer and bourbon list with regular music nights, and Mad Paddle Brewstillery books bands in its taproom. Shipley’s Tavern and the Historic Broadway Hotel & Tavern round out the downtown bar scene — the Broadway, established in 1834, advertises itself as Indiana’s oldest tavern, a claim several Hoosier bars make in slightly different words.
Outdoors and Free
Bicentennial Park, downtown near the riverfront, hosts concerts through the warm months. Be careful searching for it: there is a second Bicentennial Park with its own summer concert series in New Albany, an hour downriver, and listings sites regularly confuse the two.
Unbroken Circle Music Festival
September 10–12, 2026. Three days and the biggest Americana and red-dirt country bill in Indiana this year: Whiskey Myers, Sierra Ferrell, Flatland Cavalry, Greensky Bluegrass and Shane Smith & the Saints on top, with Whitey Morgan & the 78’s, American Aquarium, Silverada, Josh Meloy, Tanner Usrey, Them Dirty Roses, Emily Nenni, Alex Williams and a dozen more underneath. Madison’s own music organization maintains a downtown map showing which venues have someone playing that weekend, which is the fastest way to plan a night here. Individual bars post to Facebook and not much else — a pattern we run into across Indiana, and the reason this site exists.
Nearby
Madison sits between Louisville and Cincinnati, with Hanover College just west and Clifty Falls State Park on the edge of town. Downriver, Jeffersonville and New Albany are about an hour, with free riverfront concerts and a late-night bar district; the rest of the region is on our southeast Indiana page.
